Multiple formaldehyde oxidation/detoxification pathways in Burkholderia fungorum LB400.

Burkholderia species are free-living bacteria with a versatile metabolic lifestyle. The genome of B. fungorum LB400 is predicted to encode three different pathways for formaldehyde oxidation: an NAD-linked, glutathione (GSH)-independent formaldehyde dehydrogenase; an NAD-linked, GSH-dependent formaldehyde oxidation system; and a tetrahydromethanopterin-methanofuran-dependent formaldehyde oxidat...

Burkholderia fungorum Septicemia

We report the first case of community-acquired bacteremia with Burkholderia fungorum, a newly described member of the Burkholderia cepacia complex. A 9-year-old girl sought treatment with septic arthritis in her right knee and ankle with soft tissue involvement. Commercial identification systems did not identify the causative microorganism.

Synovial Tissue Infection with Burkholderia fungorum

To the Editor: The genus Burkholderia, first proposed in 1992, has now expanded to consist of many species (1). Bacteria of this genus exhibit extensive ubiquity; they have been isolated from human, animal, and environmental sources (1,2). Although rare, Burkholderia fungorum has been implicated in several human infections (2–4). We isolated B. fungorum from the synovial tissue of a patient’s k...

The Homogentisate and Homoprotocatechuate Central Pathways Are Involved in 3- and 4-Hydroxyphenylacetate Degradation by Burkholderia xenovorans LB400

BACKGROUND Genome characterization of the model PCB-degrading bacterium Burkholderia xenovorans LB400 revealed the presence of eleven central pathways for aromatic compounds degradation, among them, the homogentisate and the homoprotocatechuate pathways. However, the functionality of these central pathways in strain LB400 has not been assessed and related peripheral pathways has not been descri...

Burkholderia xenovorans LB400 harbors a multi-replicon, 9.73-Mbp genome shaped for versatility.

Burkholderia xenovorans LB400 (LB400), a well studied, effective polychlorinated biphenyl-degrader, has one of the two largest known bacterial genomes and is the first nonpathogenic Burkholderia isolate sequenced. From an evolutionary perspective, we find significant differences in functional specialization between the three replicons of LB400, as well as a more relaxed selective pressure for g...
